Botox vs. Filler: What’s the Difference?
Are you looking for an effective way to smooth forehead lines or reduce under eye hollows? Botox and filler are two of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Both Botox and filler involve injecting a substance into targeted areas of the face and have increased in popularity over recent years.
Whether your skin has thinned out due to aging or weight loss, or you want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, face fillers and Botox are great ways to make your skin look younger and smoother.
Since Botox and filler can correct different skin problems, you need to be aware of the differences between the two. Knowing why they are different will help you to understand what procedures are likely to help your skin, although our staff is always there to provide advice and guidance!. Together we can work to achieve your skin goals with natural-looking results.
What is Botox?
Botox is a botulinum toxin that can be safely administered in small amounts to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Botox relaxes muscles in the face, and once these muscles are more relaxed, wrinkles smooth or can be completely removed.
If you opt for Botox treatments, then you need to have regular top-ups. It isn’t a one-off procedure that will remove all fine lines but needs to be repeated typically 2-3 times per year..
What are Fillers?
Unlike Botox which relaxes muscles, dermal fillers add volume to the skin, especially to add plump to lips, or smoothing out under eye hollows. Recently we’ve been loving the results our clients in their 40’s are getting with cheek fillers to lift cheeks that are starting to sag, creating smile lines and jowling. Restylane fillers reduce the appearance of deep lines and make your face appear more contoured, especially when applied to create a more contoured jawline!
There are various types of fillers with different brands using different substances. Polylactic acid is a well-known filler substance. This acid stimulates the production of collagen in the body and is successful in treating laugh lines and nasolabial folds.
However, the most popular injectable fillers like Juvederm and Restylane contain hyaluronic acid. This natural substance is produced by the body and provides dramatic results. Since hyaluronic acid is effective for plumping lips, smoothing under-eye hollows and lifting cheeks, it is by far the most famous filler. At WMC, or preferred filler is Restylane for its effectiveness and because it contains lidocaine, a local freezing agent, for a more comfortable treatment.
What is the Difference Between Botox vs. Filler?
Many people talk about Botox and face fillers as though they are interchangeable, but the two are entirely different. Botox relaxes muscles and reduces the appearance of lines caused by forceful contractions.
Whereas Botox is usually injected into the upper half of the face, face fillers are medical gels that are usually applied in the cheeks and lips adding some localized volume and contouring. Dermal fillers give your face a more voluminous look but can also be used to smooth lines.
Both treatments are effective in fighting the appearance of aging. Our team of Registered Nurses, led by Dr W Michalski, MD will be able to tell you which treatment is most suited to your needs..
What are the Benefits of Botox and Filler?
Botox and dermal fillers target different issues and can be used separately or together to create the desired effect.
Botox helps to reduce the appearance of:
Forehead lines
’11 lines’ or frown lines between the brows
Crows feet around the eyes
As well as the above, Botox can be used as a preventative measure to stop wrinkles forming.
Dermal fillers can:
Plump up jowls where the skin sags
Give your jaw more contour and definition
Reduce the appearance of lines on the lower half of the face, such as marionette lines and smile lines
Create fuller lips
